Coaches association list Anderson’s Brumik among those to be lauded
THE COACH of Navasky Anderson, national record holder in the 800 metres, heads the list of coaches to be awarded by the Jamaica Track and Field Coaches Association (JATAFCA) as the body marked National Coaches Day yesterday.
Tom Brumlik, who helped Anderson to become the first Jamaican man to reach the final of the two-lap event at a World Athletics Championships, will be presented with the Hector-Smith Master Coach Award, named after the late Edward Hector and Eldemire Smith.
Anderson, who ran one minute, 43.72 to lower the national mark in the semi-finals, went lower in the final, clocking 1:42.76 seconds, finishing seventh, and was lauded for competing well against the eight top 800-metre runners in the world. The race marked the first time in history where all competitors clocked under 1:43.00.
Following what the body described as a successful 2025 season at both the junior and senior levels, JATAFCA also announced awards for long and distinguished service to the nation in five categories: Silver for 20 to 25 years, Gold for 26 to 30 years, Platinum for 30 to 40 years, Lifetime Award for over 40 years, and the Master Coach Award.
The awards ceremony will be held on November 22 under the theme ‘Sustainability of Athletics Through the Development of Coaches’.
JATAFCA, which is the internationally recognised body for Jamaica’s track and field coaches, covering primary, secondary, tertiary, club and the elite levels, is an affiliate of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association and is endorsed by international governing body World Athletics.
October 6 is recognised as National Coaches Day across many federations and helps to bring focus to some of the issues and challenges facing the profession.
Meanwhile Sport Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, in her message, hailed “the immense contribution of coaches across the island as the nation observes National Coaches Day”, noting that the day, officially proclaimed by Governor General Sir Patrick Linton Allen on September 27, 2022, “emphasises the profound impact coaches have on the development of our people and on our athletic prowess”.
