Reid gives Harbour View hard-fought win over Dunbeholden
TRAYVONE REID continued his excellent form for Harbour View this season, scoring the lone goal from the penalty spot as Harbour View defeated Dunbeholden 1-0 in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at the Drewsland stadium yesterday.
The win lifted Harbour View five places up from second to last (13th) to eighth in the table with eight points.
However, Reid has either scored or assisted six of the nine goals Harbour View have netted this season, and assistant coach Sydney McFarlane emphasised the player’s growing importance to the team.
“Trayvone is an excellent player. We need him to do what we know he can do - win games. Because he is the person who can create things for us. So we need him to do it every time,” he said.
Harbour View got off to a great start when referee Nerissa Goldson called a handball in the box, and team captain and talisman Reid stepped up to slot home the spot kick to put Harbour View ahead.
Dunbeholden showed a lot less intensity than in previous outings, but were not totally outplayed and had their moments, but couldn’t get through a stubborn Harbour View defence.
Reid had the best chance to add a second goal before the break, but his shot from 10 yards was pushed over by goalkeeper Jean-Luke Wilmott.
There was little to write about in the second half despite both teams showing serious attacking intent.
As the half grew, Dunbeholden started to establish some sort of ascendancy through Nicholas Nelson, and Stephen Barnett had good openings but fired aimlessly over the top.
Harbour View midfielder Demar Rose had the best chance of the half when he arrived in the box for a cross from Rohan Brown, but his acrobatic attempt from six yards went over the bar.
Nelson also had another good shot for Dunbeholden, which goalkeeper Garwin Davis had to parry for a corner.
Stephen Barnett had the best chance to equalise for Dunbeholden, but he placed the ball wide of the near post from three yards out.
“It’s a precious three points,” said McFarlane. “Getting the win is very precious. Because we started the season very poorly, and didn’t look like we were going to get it together. But we’ve worked hard, and it’s showing on the field.
“But we should have done better managing the game, because we scored early. But we didn’t manage the game as we should have. Second half, we weren’t as intense as we should have [been] and let the game go. But we defended well, and that’s one of the good things.”
Dunbeholden coach Damion Gordon said poor finishing and poor officiating cost them the points.
“We played well in the second half. But the game is about two halves and I don’t think we started the game well.
“The decision for the penalty was very unlucky. I think in any situation, if you have a quality referee, she would have looked to the assistant, which she never did. And it is not the first. We have been seeing it for some time now,” he stated.
Dunbeholden stay ninth in the table on seven points.
In the day’s other game at Drewsland, Treasure Beach beat Arnett Gardens 1-0.
