Human rights group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) has urged the Dr Andrew Holness-led administration to resume the vital work on constitutional reform with strong bipartisan efforts, ensuring an inclusive and participatory process following its win in Wednesday's general election.

The call came in a media release in which JFJ congratulated the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and Holness on their victory in the election.

It said as the nation looks forward to the formation of the new government, it was eagerly anticipating the announcement of the Cabinet, "which we hope will reflect an energised commitment to the JLP’s manifesto promises".

"We are particularly encouraged by the party’s outlined priorities in justice reform, national security, anti-corruption, governance, and plans to address gender-based violence and domestic violence. These areas are critical to building a more equitable and just society, and we look forward to seeing robust action and measurable progress in these domains," it said.

In the matter of constitutional reform, JFJ said the reforms should deliver transformative changes addressing state power and authority, accountability to the people, stronger protection for human rights, and entrenchment of key institutions to strengthen Jamaica’s democratic framework.

It said it stood ready to support and collaborate with the government to ensure these reforms are inclusive and reflective of the needs of the Jamaican people.

"While the JLP’s manifesto provides a strong foundation for progress, JFJ encourages the government to explore additional opportunities for transformative governance. We advocate for bipartisan efforts in parliamentary committees, including the appointment of opposition members as chairs, to foster greater collaboration and accountability. Moreover, civil society participation in decision-making must be deepened to ensure that diverse voices are heard and integrated into policy development," JFJ said.

In the meantime, the group acknowledged the increased seat count of the Opposition People's National Party (PNP), which it said would contribute to a more balanced legislature.

"We urge the PNP to engage constructively with the government, promoting strong accountability mechanisms for transparency and responsiveness to Jamaicans’ needs," it stated.

The JLP secured 34 seats to the PNP's 29 in Wednesday's election.
