Constable freed after $400,000 mediation settlement in unlawful wounding case
A police constable was on Monday freed of an unlawful wounding charge after successful mediation which led to him paying the complainant, a district constable, $400,000.
Constable Ricardo Fray was also freed from a malicious destruction of property charge arising from the same incident.
He had been placed before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and a ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the December 6, 2024 incident.
At their first court appearance the concerned parties agreed to explore dispute resolution by way of mediation.
Subsequent to the successful mediation and confirmation of payment to the complainant, the Crown offered no evidence and a not-guilty verdict was entered and the police constable was discharged.
Between January 1, 2024 and July 31, 2025, sixty-four members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force have been ruled for charge as a result of cases investigated by INDECOM.
INDECOM says more than 40 have been charged and placed before the court, with arrests pending, in 23 cases.
