Jamaica’s Credit Unions to celebrate National Credit Union Week under theme of Global Prosperity
The Credit Unions of Jamaica are set to celebrate National Credit Union Week from October 12 to 18, 2025, under the unifying theme, ‘Co-operation for a Prosperous World.’ The week of islandwide observances will highlight the movement’s commitment to community and financial independence.
The theme draws direct inspiration from the United Nations’ declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Co-operatives, with its own theme, ‘Co-operatives Build a Better World.’ It underscores the core principles that guide credit unions, including a deep concern for community, the economic participation of members, and voluntary, open membership. A central mission for these financial cooperatives remains empowering their members to achieve financial independence.
Thomas Belekevich, World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) Director of Member Services, emphasized the movement’s connectedness. “In today’s world, connection happens across time zones ... Credit unions may be separated by oceans, but we remain united by purpose,” he stated.
“For members, that means support is always within reach – through mobile banking, a phone call or a trusted advisor.”
This sense of a shared global purpose, uniting over 74,000 credit unions worldwide, is further strengthened by modern technology, ensuring members remain connected to the cooperative mission.
Throughout the week, Jamaica’s 23 credit unions will engage their communities with a lineup of activities including games, giveaways, special events, and prizes. They will also conduct community outreach at churches, shelters, infirmaries, and schools, pending the necessary permissions.
The celebrations will feature two major public events. The week will commence with a National
Church Service at the East Queen Street Baptist Church on Sunday, October 12, at 9:00 a.m. On
Thursday, October 16, which is also International Credit Union Day, the public is invited to a free ‘Praise in the Park’ gospel concert at Emancipation Park, starting at 6:00 p.m.
National Credit Union Week activities are organised by the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union
League (JCCUL) on behalf of credit unions. Individual credit unions will announce their specific schedules and promotions through traditional and social media channels. Members and the public are encouraged to contact their local credit union for further details.
