Letter of the Day | Political parties need to exhibit honesty and integrity
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Both of Jamaica’s major political parties are making numerous promises in their respective party manifestos and on political platforms. Their representatives are travelling across the island and making stops in Jamaica’s hills, valleys, town squares and city streets. Of course, in a general election campaign, this is par for the course.
However, I have watched and heard on TV and YouTube many of the recent festive jubilation-filled political party spectacles. But, I do not recall hearing, from the various leaders and candidates representing and speaking on behalf of both parties, promises being made about honesty and integrity being given the highest priority by political candidates. This should be on the top of the agenda for whichever party wins the general election and forms the next government.
If this is not done then why should any well-thinking member of the electorate vote for a candidate from either political party? After all in any democracy the honesty and integrity of incumbent and aspiring members of parliament – be they in the government or in the Opposition – needs to be clearly expressed. If this is missing, then, why should that candidate get anyone’s votes?
Along with all the other promises John and Jane candidates make, if they can’t promise to at all times and in all ways execute their duties with the highest level of honesty and integrity then they do not deserve to get my vote.
