It’s a sobering victory

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) victory on September 3, while allowing them to remain in power, has been greatly underwhelming. The party must, therefore, sober up and begin to ask itself some hard and serious questions about why, after all its accomplishments as a government over the past decade, the party lost 15 seats while the People’s National Party gained 15 seats.

The biggest victor in my opinion is the Opposition Leader Mark Golding as he turned around, in a most overwhelming and convincing way, the great parliamentary seat losses the PNP had suffered under Peter Phillips’ leadership in 2020. As a result he has cemented his position as PNP party leader and president and has put his critics, both within and outside of the party on the backfoot.

Coming from a 49/14 parliamentary seat count to a 34/29 seat count, is nothing to scoff at and should act as a catalyst for the JLP to do some serious soul-searching and reflection.
