Reassess role of traffic police in Ja
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I write to express my concerns about the role of the traffic police in Jamaica, particularly around congested intersections. While we understand the necessity of enforcing traffic regulations, it is disheartening to observe that officers often prioritise monitoring for driver infractions rather than actively managing traffic flow.
It is commonplace to see police officers standing just feet away from areas of heavy congestion, appearing disengaged and more focused on looking for ways to issue tickets. This inaction not only exacerbates the traffic situation, but also undermines public trust in law enforcement.
Many citizens feel that the traffic police’s primary objective has shifted towards generating revenue for the Government, rather than ensuring safe and efficient traffic management. This perception raises concerns about the lack of attention given to the pressing issues of road safety and congestion which significantly affect our daily lives.
We urge the authorities to reassess the traffic police’s role and prioritise the management of traffic over mere enforcement of regulations. Effective traffic management would ultimately lead to safer roads and a more pleasant commuting experience for all.
