Argentina’s nostalgic gesture

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In recent days, the international press revealed Argentina's refusal to play Israel in a warm-up friendly leading up to the World Cup. As a result of this progressive stance, the Israeli political leadership began a campaign to tarnish Argentine's football team as being motivated by hate. First, I must congratulate the decision made by the South American football team as bold political decision reminiscent of the role of sports in the struggles against apartheid.

Second, it must be understood that there is a real problem in Israel, especially with establishing Jerusalem as its capital; and also the personal decision made by US President Donald Trump to recognise the new capital. There is much dispute in the Middle East regarding Israel, and not only the capturing of land from the Palestinian but also capturing places like the Golan Heights. The constant killing of unarmed people is a crime against humanity. The time has come to take a stand with justice, and that position must inform Israel that the civilised world will not accept its continued domination and persecution of other peoples.
