Opposition member quits

Former Opposition Leader Wayne Furbert has quit the United Bermuda Party (UBP) and will sit as an independent in the House of Assembly.

He says his departure was over the failure of the party to reform into an election-winning entity.

Furbert has not ruled out joining the Progressive Labour Party, which has won the last three general elections since ending the UBP\'s 30-year grip on power in 1998.

Furbert had been deeply hurt by a failed attempt to expel him from the party.

This after he publicly criticised the choice of former senator Charlie Swan for last week\'s by-election in Southampton West Central, which Swan retained for the UBP.
