Police claim media reports inaccurate

Published:Sunday | January 12, 2014 | 10:30 AM

The police have accused some members of the media of inaccurate reporting on a case currently before the Supreme Court.

The police did not reveal the case at the centre of their concerns, but charged that most of the media reports emanating from the trial were replete with inaccurate information about what transpired in court.

And they have warned that if it continues, a report will be made to the presiding judge to have action taken against those journalists.

Citing one example, the police complained that some journalists reported this week that they were to be blamed for a compact disc that went missing from the case file and that 40 cellular phones were seized during the investigation of the case.

This information, the police asserted, was not only inaccurate, but never came out in court. Charging that some media practitioners were deliberately sacrificing facts for sensationalism, the police have appealed to the Press Association of Jamaica to remind journalists of the importance of accurate reporting.
