One day after Caricom signed the Economic Partnership Agreement, a UK-based charity group has accused the European Union of betraying the Caribbean\'s development goals.
Thirteen Caricom member states, the Dominican Republic and Europe signed the pact, which is aimed at guaranteeing the region\'s access to Europe\'s markets.
Oxfam and other NGO\'s yesterday criticised the EU, over it’s handling of negotiations for a new trade deal with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries.
They contend that the agreement forces the former colonies to open up their markets.
Oxfam says the EU should provide binding, additional assistance to support the Caribbean to adjust and support its economic development.
