Girvon Brown scoreshat-trick in BH football

Wisynco secured their spot in the quarter-final round of the Scotiabank-sponsored Kingston & St Andrew Business House Football Association KO competition, with an emphatic 4-0 win over Carib Cement last Monday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Prolific goalscorer Girvon Brown netted a hat-trick, with Clifton Berry adding the fourth. After a slow start and a few missed chances, Brown opened the scoring in the 36th minute when he got a through pass, rounded Cement's keeper Lucan Powell and slotted into an empty goal. Carib Cement should have equalised just before the half ended when Jermaine 'Fast Car' Rowe was sent on, but an alert Kelso Cousins in goal for Wisynco saved his effort.

Brown scored his second in the 62nd minute, while Berry got his name on the scoresheet in the 77th minute. Brown sealed the issue and completed his hat-trick when he again latched on to a through pass, rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty goal.

Also on Monday, Red Stripe, with goals from Norado Brown and Ricardo Dixon, defeated Island Special Constabulary Force 2-1, with Anthony Lawson scoring for the losers.

On Wednesday, first-year entrants Metrodade Protection created the first upset of the season when they defeated 2011 champions The Gleaner Company 3-2, with Corey Burke scoring twice and Paul Francis once, while Fabian Nethersole and Keiron Brock scored for The Gleaner.

In another game, University of the West Indies defeated Jamaica Fire Brigade 2-1, with Andre Bernal and Dave Pinnock scoring for the winners and Kevin Frater for the losers.

Three more quarter-finalists will be known today when Bank of Jamaica take on National Continental Corporation at Edward Seaga Sports Complex, defending champions Petrojam oppose Grace Kennedy at Tinson Pen, with Jamaica Customs up against Xerox at Red Stripe Oval. National Commercial Bank will host Jamaica Urban Transit Company at Ardenne High School in a rescheduled first round game, with the winner to play Scotiabank and decide the eighth team. All games begin at 3:30 p.m.

The quarter-final games are tentatively scheduled for August 5-7, with the semi-final slated for August 10.

Royal Lakes hostChampions Cup

Royal Lakes, a former winner of the LIME St Catherine FA Major League, will host two past champions of the St Catherine FA and the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League winner for the past two years, Cavalier Soccer Club, in a Champions Cup one-day tournament at Royal Lakes playing field, Lakes Pen, on Emancipation Day, August 1. Action begins at 11 a.m.

The two other St Catherine teams are DB Basovak, last season's Major League winner, and Frasziers Whip, a team that won the Major League a couple of season's ago and played in the Super League. Cavalier now play in the Red Stripe Premier League and had a good second round where they made it to the end of round final, against eventual champions Harbour View.

The champion team and the top players will be rewarded for their efforts.

A new champion will be crowned in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Business House (BH) KO domino competition after defending champions Berger were knocked out in the quarter-finals on Friday, July 5 at the National Housing Trust car park.

Although stopping Jamaica Public Service (JPS) 76-71 in the first round earlier in the evening, Berger found Wray & Nephew too good in the quarter-final and were beaten 70-66.

In the earlier matches, University of the West Indies defeated Social Development Commission (SDC) 80-76, Jamaica Observer beat Courts 78-74, Jamaica Brandy stopped The Gleaner 74-67, National Baking Company beat Kirk Distributors 80-61, while Wray &Nephew and Ministry of Finance played to a 67-all tie, before Wray &Nephew prevailed in extra time.

Ramone Francis hit 106 runs to pilot Ken's Wildflower to their third straight victory, a 103-run win over Colours International at the Bridgeport Sports ground last Wednesday. Ken's batted first and compiled a challenging 213-7 off their allotted 35 overs. Francis led the way with his century, while Javel Glen scored 34. Jordan Bowen 3-55 nd Wently Palmer 2-46, took most wickets for Colours.

Colours were bowled out for 110 in 34.5 overs, with Romario Lynch (44) and Andre Bailey (24) making most runs for Colours. Francis came back to crush Colours' hopes by taking 4-14.

St Catherine dominate Confed Youth leagues

St Catherine will be confirmed champions in both the South Central Confederation Under-13 and Under-15 youth competitions, regardless of the results in the final round of matches today.

St Catherine lead the Under-13 standings with 13 points and the Under-15s similarly with 13 points. In the Under-13s, they are five points clear of Manchester, while in the Under-15s, they are six clear of Clarendon. In five games so far in each division, both St Catherine teams have won four games and drawn once. Today they will host Clarendon at Spanish Town Prison Oval, while Manchester host St Elizabeth.

Manchester are best placed to finish second in the Under-13s, as they have dominated St Elizabeth in this division. Clarendon have the best chance to take second in the Under-15s, as they are the only team to have earned a point against St Catherine this season.

Two rounds of matches were played this week. On Monday, Manchester defeated Clarendon in both divisions, while St Catherine achieved the same against St Elizabeth. On Wednesday, Manchester lost to St Catherine 1-0 in both divisions. Clarendon defeated St Elizabeth 1-0 in the Under-13s, but St Elizabeth turned the tables in the Under-15s, winning 3-1.

Peter Bunting Central Manchester netball

Matches in round two of the Peter Bunting Central Manchester Community Netball League will be hosted today at Mandeville Primary and Junior High School. There will also be matches at Royal Flat Community Centre tomorrow. Starting time for both days is 3 p.m.

The competition got under way last weekend at the Belitiro Community playing field. Among those making motivational presentations to the teams were retired sports administrator Pat Anderson, Member of Parliament for Central Manchester Peter Bunting, Senator Wensworth Skeffery and Manchester Netball Association president, Kadeanne Holness.

Bunting announced the winning incentives, which are among the highest in Jamaica involving netball. The winners will pick up $80,000, runners-up $60,000, third place $30,000 and $20,000.

In the opening matches, hosts Belitiro ran by Albion 35-6, Mandeville All Stars mauled Three Chains 39-2, Royal Flat humbled Heartease 27-3, Georges Valley outscored Pear Tree 14-10, New Hall got the better of Broad Leaf 19-11 and Davyton stopped Porus 16-6.

Jamalco officially Clarendon Major League champions

Jamalco are the Captain's Bakery & Grill Clarendon Major League football champions, following their 3-0 win over Comfort in their final game of the season on Wednesday, which advanced their tally to 53 points.

Comfort (39 points) ended second in the 12-team competition.

Jamalco finally completed the script that began in 2011, when they were promoted from winning the Division One in their debut season. A similar feat was expected in the Major League, but they were upset on the final day when little known Four Paths won the title, relegating Jamalco to runners-up.

The team's stated goal is to reach the National Premier League. They will get the first real crack when they enter the South Central Confed Super League later this year. An amazing feature of Jamalco's season is how they played unbeaten, losing only to guest team Sporting Central Academy.

Meanwhile, Treadlight were crowned Division One winners last weekend and along with second place Kemps Hill Football Club, will be promoted to the Major League. They will replace Milk River and Rock River, which were both relegated.

Portmore aim at Christian Pen

Portmore United will take aim at Christian Pen tomorrow in the second round of the Pines Imaging Centre Portmore U-17 Football League, in the opening match of a double-header at Christian Pen, starting at 1 p.m.

In the second game at the venue, Edgewater take on Dunbeholden at 3 p.m.

Another double-header is scheduled at Westchester, with Bridgeport playing the opener against Hellshire United at 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m., Westchester challenging Watson Grove.

Last Sunday, Portmore United, playing with nine players for the duration of the entire match, blanked a full-strength Bridgeport team 3-0 in the feature match of a double-header as the league kicked off at Ferdie Neita Park in Braeton.

COMFORTABLE LEAD

Kimonie Bailey and Ricardo Dennis gave Portmore a comfortable 2-0 cushion at the half-time break and Siegel Knight sealed the issue with a second-half strike.

Portmore appeared to be on the back foot even before the referee's whistle blew to start the match as due to ID issues, they could only use nine players from their roster.

This, however, didn't faze the experienced Premier League team and they dominated in all departments of the game. Bridgeport had their moments, but didn't capitalise on chances afforded them and will have to regroup for the next round.

In last Sunday's opening game, East Portmore Portals blanked Braeton United 3-0. Fitzalbert Chambers struck a double and Shaunde McIntosh added another goal from the penalty spot.
