Bell, Broad turn tide

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP):England took control of the opening Ashes Test on yesterday after a wicket-less evening session for Australia on the third day, reaching 326-6 for a lead of 261 runs.

Ian Bell was 95 not out from 228 balls with 12 fours and his unbroken partnership of 108 with Stuart Broad has transformed the Test at Trent Bridge.

Broad made a controversial 47 not out from 122 balls, which included five fours but only after he was given not out despite clearly edging Ashton Agar to Michael Clarke at slip - a decision Australia were unable to overturn having wasted their referrals. Scorers: England 215 (Jonathan Trott 48, Jonny Bairstow 37; Peter Siddle 5-50, James Pattinson 3-69, Mitchell Starc 2-54) and 326-6 (Ian Bell 95 not out, Kevin Pietersen 64, Alastair Cook 50; Starc 2-66, Agar 2-82). Australia 280 (Ashton Agar 98, Phillip Hughes 81 not out; James Anderson 5-85).

Scotia, General Accident, unbeaten in BH Netball

Defending champions General Accident and last year's beaten finalists Scotiabank are on a collision course in the Business House Netball Association, after going through the preliminary round unbeaten.

Both won five matches to top their respective zones with maximum 15 points.

Scotiabank will meet Grace Kennedy in quarter-final action this evening at the Leila Robinson Courts, starting at 6:30, while General Accident will play their quarter-final match next Saturday. Their opponents will be either Sagicor 'A' or NHT 'A'.

Street Gun champs tomorrow

Licensed firearm holders, lawmen and gun sports enthusiasts will turn their attention to the year's second National Street Gun championship, to be hosted at the Manchester Rifle and Pistol Club (MRPC) range in Lincoln tomorrow.

The show starts at 10 a.m., but the range will actually be open at 8:00 to accommodate those who want to shoot early and without crowd scrutiny.

The Street Gun Championship generates most interest on the local shooting calendar, as the routines mimic typical Jamaican danger scenarios. All classes compete together and no advantages are gained, regardless of MRPC membership. There is an admission cost of $1000, with a gate prize for one lucky fan.
