Munro stay dangerous with big win

Ten-man Munro College brushed aside Frome Technical 5-0 in the round of 32 of the ISSA Ben Francis Knockout Tournament at the Frome playing field yesterday to advance to the next round.

In a hostile atmosphere, Jaquan Mitchell and Kajaye Williams both scored twice for Munro, while Kashane Beckford added the other goal.

Mitchell opened the scoring in the 13th minute before leading scorer Williams doubled the advantage seven minutes later. Munro’s Nikosi Foncette and Frome’s Wayne Mullings were both sent off for violent conduct, but Munro maintained control.

Mitchell completed his brace in the 55th minute to make it 3-0, Williams added his second in the 77th, and Beckford sealed the rout in the 90th.

Munro coach Everdean Scarlett praised his team for keeping their intensity despite being reduced to 10 men.

“We always knew that it was going to be hard coming here to play. In fact, I was told that no Munro team had ever come to Westmoreland and gotten three points, and this was something that I wanted to be special. I embedded it in the players and told them that we hoped to come back with victory. They stuck to the task,” Scarlett said proudly.

“Despite getting a red card, we didn’t wilt or drop our intensity. Overall, we took control of the game from the first goal, and we knew it was only going to get easier from there.”

Frome coach Cleighton Stephens expressed disappointment but said the result did not define his team.

“Munro came to fight. They wanted it more today. We were not fighting today. It’s really disappointing because it’s the first time we have lost in a competitive game here. However, the scoreline doesn’t determine who we are as a team,” Stephens said.

Elsewhere, defending champions Clarendon College began their title defence with a 7-0 win over Mayday High, while Glenmuir High hammered Knockalva Technical 14-0. Denbigh High edged St Elizabeth Technical 2-1, and Manchester High thrashed Titchfield 8-0.

The round of 16 of the Ben Francis Knockout Tournament begins Saturday, October 3.
