GC Foster hosts first ‘Play for Recovery’ day
GC FOSTER College of Physical Education and Sport successfully hosted the first in a series of Play for Recovery (Play Day) events yesterday, transforming the grounds into a vibrant hub of movement, connection, and positive energy.
The event is part of an ongoing initiative designed to support emotional, physical, and social recovery through structured play and physical activity. Students, faculty, and community members gathered for a dynamic day featuring recreational activities, minor games and inclusive sport activities for boys and girls.
The first group came from the Mandeville area and featured children who have not had play since the passage of Hurricane Melissa, focusing on the six to 12-year-old grouping.
“The Play for Recovery initiative is about more than just PE and sport. It’s about rebuilding community spirit and supporting mental wellness through joyful, purposeful play,” said Jason Henry, fitness instruction lecturer.
Henry added that “GC Foster College is proud to lead this effort and to provide a space where individuals can reconnect, recharge, and participate in activities that foster resilience”.
Participants engaged in a variety of activities aimed at improving mood, reducing stress, and fostering social interaction. The event also highlighted the college’s commitment to holistic development, recognising the role of sport and physical activity in overall well-being.
The event marked the beginning of a series of similar events to be rolled out across the academic year, each designed to empower participants and strengthen community bonds.
The college’s administration also extended gratitude to all partners, volunteers, and participants who contributed to what it called ‘the success’ of this inaugural Play for Recovery event.
