Police National odds on for FUN title after dominant day in Miramar
Jamaica’s Police National Netball Team (PNNT), on Saturday, cruised into Sunday’s Championship Division as favourites to top the inaugural Florida United Netball (FUN) Extravaganza at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center in Miramar, Florida.
PNNT topped Zone B with three consecutive wins, defeating Trinidad and Tobago’s Eastern Quarry Thrillers 10-5, Florida’s Tampa Bay Panthers 9-7 and Royal United 14-8, to book a Championship Division showdown against Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Wellness, runners-up to Florida’s Sunballerz in Zone A.
Sunballerz, made up primarily of Jamaicans residing overseas, ran through Zone A undefeated and will start howling favourites against either Eastern Quarry Thrillers or Molynes United. Final scores were being processed up to press time.
The Floridians are on a collision course with PNNT, who benefitted from a fired-up goal shoot Kenesha Beckett, who had crashed out of last year’s Florida Netball Senior Classic (FNSC) with an injury.
Teaming up with ace goal attack Marcella Thompson, Beckett was lethal from distance. Beckett’s shooting relieved Thompson, who had scored all 23 goals in PNNT’s three first-round games at FNSC last year.
A good all-round performance in defence, led by goal keep Rhoda Moulton, unsettled opposing attackers and shooters.
General manager, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Phillips, lauded the team for what he described as “a commanding performance”.
“I am pleased with the energy and the team spirit, which was very high. I am looking for greater things tomorrow,” said Phillips, adding that the Jamaica Constabulary Force team could also be playing for a title in the Gold Division after closing Zone A with two wins and a draw from five games.
