FORMER ST George’s College high jumper Zayne Palomino, who is in his first year as an assistant track and field coach at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, says he wants to give back to the sport that shaped him.

The 23-year-old Palomino, son of former St George’s College student, Ray Palomino, graduated in June this year from the same university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management with honours.

A two-time NCAA All-American, Palomino achieved a best finish of fifth place at last year’s Indoor Championships. He was also third at this year’s Jamaica Senior National Championships in the men’s high jump, behind Romaine Beckford and Raymond Richards. His personal best stands at 2.22 metres.

In addition to coaching, Palomino is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Sports Management at the same institution. He explained that his move into coaching comes from a desire to use his experience to guide young athletes.

“While competing, I often helped my teammates with the knowledge I had gained over the years,” said Palomino. “Being able to assist the next generation of athletes is my goal.”

“Helping them get into college, coaching them to achieve their athletic goals, and most importantly, ensuring they graduate and build successful careers – that’s what truly motivates me.”

Palomino also expressed gratitude to the coaches who inspired him.

“The coaches I’ve had over the years are a big reason why I wanted to coach from early.”
