Nine members of Jamaica’s under-15 men’s football squad that participated in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U15 Boys Challenge Series in the Dominican Republic have tested positive for COVID-19.

The young footballers will have to undergo an automatic period of isolation and produce two negative COVID-19 test results to be permitted to travel home.

Team coach Andrew Peart gave the assurance that they are receiving good care from team manager Remawn Thomas and team doctor Ruchelle Brown Calvert.

“The number is nine, but any other information I will be unable to disclose because of the nature of the situation,” Peart told The Gleaner. “But there are nine players. They are all asymptomatic and they are in the very good care of our team doctor.

“Quarantine is usually about two weeks, but I am not sure of the exact date they are to return.”

Based on reports, the four players tested positive at the start of the competition, while the others registered their positive results before the team’s departure on Monday.

The young Reggae Boyz finished at the bottom of their three-team group, which included Puerto Rico and St Kitts and Nevis, and were eliminated.

The other members of the team returned to the island on Monday.

The Girls’ team, which was also in the Dominican Republic for the U-14 Girls Challenge Series, all produced negative results and were allowed to return home as scheduled.
