THE INTERNATIONAL Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that World Maritime Day 2024 will be observed on September 26 under the theme ‘Navigating the future: Safety first!’ The day will be marked by a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime safety and security, while addressing the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements and climate change.

A central event, the World Meteorological Organization-IMO symposium on extreme maritime weather, will be held from September 23 to 26 at the IMO headquarters. Focused on ‘Bridging the Knowledge Gap Towards Safer Shipping’, the symposium aims to improve understanding of extreme weather events and their impact on maritime operations.

To further emphasise the importance of safety, IMO headquarters will be illuminated in blue on the evening of September 26. Member states, intergovernmental organisations, and non-governmental organisations are encouraged to participate in this initiative by lighting up their own landmarks.

This underscores the IMO’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of global shipping. As maritime technology rapidly evolves, the organisation is working to develop regulations that can accommodate new innovations while maintaining high safety standards.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, a cornerstone of maritime safety regulations.

IMO’s focus on safety aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include SDG 7, affordable and clean energy; SDG 8, inclusive and sustainable economic growth; SDG 9, industry, innovation, and infrastructure; SDG 13, climate action; and SDG 14, conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

By emphasising safety and responsible maritime practices, IMO aims to contribute to a sustainable future for the shipping industry and the global economy.
