A police constable accidentally shot himself with his service weapon on Sunday while at the Half-Way Tree Police Station in St Andrew.

The matter is being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).

Reports indicate that about 8:00 a.m., the 29-year-old constable was handling his service firearm when a round was accidentally discharged, injuring his finger.

He was taken to hospital, where he received medical treatment. His condition has not been disclosed.

INDECOM has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This is the second reported case of an alleged negligent discharge involving a police officer since the start of the year.

In January, a similar incident was reported in St James, where another officer allegedly discharged his firearm and also sustained an injury to his finger.

Both matters are currently under investigation by INDECOM.
