ECLAC to release study on impact of US tariffs on Latin America and the Caribbean
SANTIAGO, Chile, CMC -The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) says it will on Wednesday release a study examining the impact of the United States tariff policy on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
ECLAC said that the document which will provide a special analysis of the effects that the United States’ new tariff policy has had on the LAC, forms part of its annual report entitled International Trade Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean 2025: International trade in a new era of weaponised interdependence.
United States President Donald Trump introduced tariffs on goods reaching the North American country from around the world, arguing that the move will boost American manufacturing and create jobs, but critics warn of higher prices and damage to the global economy.
The US Supreme Court is considering whether the tariffs are illegal and last weekend President Trump announced that he was scrapping US tariffs on beef, coffee, tropical fruits and a broad swath of other commodities amid mounting pressure on his administration to better combat high consumer price.
According to ECLAC, the document addresses the recent trade situation and its prospects at a global and regional level; analyses the position of Latin America and the Caribbean vis-à-vis the new US trade policy as well as examines the intensity of technology and advanced human capital in the region’s goods-and-services exports.
According to the report, global and regional trade will remain dynamic in 2025 but prospects worsen in 2026.
ECLAC said that the launch of its flagship report, which is prepared each year by ECLAC’s Division of International Trade and Integration, will take place in an in-person and virtual press conference on Wednesday that will also be addressed ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs.
