Judge temporarily blocks Trump administration from firing workers during government shutdown

President Donald Trump’s administration for now must stop firing workers during the government shutdown, a federal judge in San Francisco ordered on Wednesday.
US District Judge Susan Illston issued the emergency order after federal agencies on Friday started issuing lay-off notices aimed at reducing the size of the federal government.
The lay-off notices are part of an effort by Trump’s Republican administration to exert more pressure on Democratic lawmakers as the government shutdown continues.
The ongoing government shutdown is delaying the announcement of the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for tens of millions of beneficiaries. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the 2024 Social Security COLA announcement will now be October 24.
It’s timed to the September Consumer Price Index, which also has not been released.
