Update | January 2026 trial for Portmore man charged in Canadian employment scam
A Portmore, St Catherine man who is charged for allegedly defrauding persons in a Canadian employment scam is to go on trial on January 30 next year.
Harvey Dawkins, of Mount Royal Estate, is answering to four counts of obtaining money by false pretence, breaches of the Consumer Protection Act, and operating an agency without a licence.
The trial date was set on Friday, October 3.
A total of US$600 was paid to two complainants as restitution when the matter was mentioned in court.
An application by Dawkins' lawyer, Earl Hamilton, to have the reporting conditions attached to his bail varied was denied by the judge.
The accused is out on $600,000 bail.
Allegations are that in March 2024, Dawkins convinced the complainants that he had connections to a Canadian employment programme.
He allegedly collected money from the complainants, who are based in St Catherine.
The police were alerted after the promised travel arrangements were not made and the complainants did not receive refunds.
Dawkins was subsequently arrested and charged with fraud.
