I was compelled to put up a fight as team captain despite the pain, says Dacres
While he failed to advance to the final of the men’s discus throw at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships, the story of Fedrick Dacres is that of a team leader who felt he had to lead by example, despite excruciating pain.
Dacres’ best effort of 60.54 metres saw him placing 28th overall, outside the top 12 needed to advance to the final.
But his series was severely hampered, as he explained that he had torn his abductor muscles just days before the competition.
“Unfortunately, about three days ago, mi a fire inna training,” he explained.
“What happened was that I punched, and then I felt a tear. We were praying that it wasn’t as bad and that I could walk through it.”
Dacres said that despite the injury, he felt his role as team captain compelled him to compete, and he was proud to have “gone down a fighter.”
Jamaica will be without a competitor in the men’s discus final, as Ralford Mullings and Chad Wright also failed to make the mark.
