Portland businessman Rupert 'Chillie' Miller has died
Well-known Portland businessman, Rupert 'Chillie' Miller, is dead.
Miller, who had a street off Folly Road named after him, reportedly died at a hospital in the Corporate Area this evening after falling ill recently.
He is best remembered for his patriotism, philanthropy, and construction expertise, which was utilised throughout Portland.
One of Miller's lifelong friends, Paul 'Bigga' Young, remembers him as a kind, jovial, and active individual, who went beyond the call of duty to assist many people.
"He was one of those persons who was always rendering assistance to not only the needy, but also ensuring that roadways are cleared during landslides caused by flooding," commented Young.
"He was always the first to respond during an emergency and Portland has lost a true servant of the people. I knew he had fallen ill, but we were expecting him to pull through, as he was a strong individual and a fighter," he added.
Miller was a leading businessman and contractor in Portland, who operated a sand and gravel quarry in the Berrydale area. He also operated a block factory and a hardware at the entrance to what has been referred to as Chillie Lane, which was named after him.
