Emancipation Square comes alive to mark Judiciary Day
On Wednesday, May 7, the Emancipation Square in Spanish Town, St Catherine, was transformed into an entertainment zone with glowing speeches and singing.
It was an occasion when members of the judiciary put down their gavels, pens and books and took to the streets to celebrate Judiciary Day.
Judges, clerks of court, assistant clerks, judges’ orderlies and ancillary workers turned out for the celebration.
“It was a very lovely arrangement and it’s great that we are celebrating and highlighting the work of the judiciary in a fun way,” Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle said.
The workers and judges marched through the square and convened along White Street.
Custos of St Catherine Icylin Golding brought greetings on behalf of the Lay Magistrates who serve the parish courts.
High Court Judge Justice Dale Palmer who presides over the St Catherine Easter Circuit Session brought greetings and promised to work with his colleagues to serve the country in the pursuit of justice.
Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott described it as an “experience” for the Old Capital.
“This is an occasion worth sharing and we are heartened to be a part of it. We need more of these activities,” Scott said.During the acknowledgements, police Inspector Ishmael Williams was commended for his mellifluous rendition of Born Free which was well-received.
For attorney-at-law Donald Bryan the occasion was simply a “ marvellous” display of unity.
The function was held under the theme “ To deliver fair and timely justice to all stakeholders” .
Many persons welcomed the exercise as a novel one, and that they were anticipating next year’s instalment.
