Trendzy by Ackeilia unveiled Island in Bloom, a spring-inspired collection featuring shells and shades of blue, at the Rhythm Sundays showcase last Sunday.
The showcase took place poolside at Ahmeraki Café, offering a seamless view of how the collection moves and breathes in a perfectly fitting setting.
Aiming to connect each new collection to the one before it, designer Ackeilia Caine shared that the 20 statement pieces were intentionally designed to build on previous collections through continuity in style.
Caine told Sunday Lifestyle: “I like to see stuff elevated with some type of accessory because I do swimsuits with belts. You don’t really see that. I like to break up things or use unconventional things or things that people aren’t thinking about.”
Accessories remain a defining element of Caine’s work, which she often uses to elevate otherwise simple silhouettes. The Island in Bloom collection features crochet pieces, hand-braiding, shells, and starfishes.
Explaining her design approach, Caine noted: “It’s really trying to play around with different crafts or hand-braiding techniques, or hand-made techniques per se. The ivory bikini with shells, where I have to drill the shells to get the holes and then macrame the shells to attach that accessory onto the swimmer so that it’s seamless.”
Each element of the designs captures the essence of spring, with hints of patterns and a focus on plain spring-themed colours and textures.
Expanding on the collection, Caine shared: “The Island in Bloom Collection includes whimsical island pieces and spring colours. I’m using blues, hues of blues, yellows, a lot of fringes to bring playfulness to spring. Not a lot of prints. I used plain colours, but there’s still a mixture of prints for those who love that playfulness.”
This time, rather than using many prints, Caine’s designs lean into bold, solid colours that allow texture and detailing to stand out.
Although the event included a collaboration of arts, many attendees were primarily anticipating the fashion showcase.
The designer also experiments with mesh, aiming for a balance between subtlety and elegance rather than overtly risqué pieces.
As for the intended wearer, the collection speaks to anyone who loves the joy that comes with spring. “These are joyful colours – yellows and blues. Thinking of spring, if you’re living in snow, you want to see the beach, you want to see the sunsets, you want to see the sun. So it’s really for that person who loves vacation or a beach party, or something along those lines.”
Among the collection’s highlights is an ivory mesh dress with yellow starfishes and fringes, which stands as the designer’s favourite.
Offering styling suggestions, Caine says, “You can wear it to the beach, or you can wear something under it because it’s see-through. You can also layer it in summer or pair it with a jacket to elevate the look.”
In attendance was Stylist Ivy Coco Maurice who shared with Sunday Lifestyle her favourite piece from the collection. “There was one piece I wish I could take with me.” That piece was the Bloom swimsuit with the drift skirt, modelled by Alliyah Wellington at the showcase.
Looking ahead, Caine shared that her next collection may lean into summer-inspired designs.
