Jamaica needs a burn unit

THE EDITOR, Madam:

For the good of Jamaica, I think corporate Jamaica need to pool their resources and fund a burn unit for the public. I know it is a costly venture, so it will take quite a number of organisations to achieve this objective.

But recent unfortunate events have demonstrated that the country is badly in need of a burn unit.

There was the young woman who was in her kitchen and the gas stove exploded. She couldn’t escape because the housing scheme was a death trap, meaning there was one way in and one way out. She was in very serious condition by the time she got to the hospital. Sadly, she passed away.

Then there was the woman whose ex-partner doused her and then set her ablaze, causing severe burns all over her body, resulting in her family seeking help to take her overseas for treatment.

In fact, in both incidents, the families were forced to turn to the public for help to take their loved ones overseas for treatment.

Something urgently needs to be done to set up a burn unit in Jamaica to save lives.
