Wheatley should have quit already

Published:Friday | June 29, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Dr Andrew Wheatley should have resigned already. His failure to do so has no place in a post-modern, civilised and progressive democracy.

Had a Petrojam-type scandal emerged and unfolded in, for example, Canada, England or Australia, and investigations by various state agencies were taking place, the minister in charge would feel the need, and be obliged, to tender his resignation.

That is the right and noble thing to do. Instead, Dr Andrew Wheatley has chosen, thus far, to remain a minister. As if to add insult to injury, he was seen on camera doing the honours at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the official opening of a petrol station. That smacks of arrogance, contempt for the Jamaican people and political party he serves, and crassness.

Whether the minister is guilty or not guilty is yet to be determined. However, what is most certain is that Dr Wheatley's resignation, as a matter of principle, decency and courtesy, should have long been submitted.
