Dancehall artiste David ‘Mavado’ Brooks has returned to Jamaica for the first time in several years, following the vacating of a 2018 warrant that had been issued for his arrest.

Superintendent Randy Sweeney, head of the St Andrew North Division, confirmed to Radio Jamaica News on Wednesday that: “Based on the information that we have at hand and the circumstances that matter has been closed.”

Attorney-at-law Hugh Wildman confirmed to THE STAR that his client met with law enforcement officials after arriving in the island on Tuesday. He said Mavado is “ecstatic” and “that there is no longer a cloud over his head with law enforcement issues in Jamaica”.

Wildman also revealed that the entertainer, who had remained overseas since the warrant was issued for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, is expected to perform in Jamaica in December.

“Everything is settled and he is now a free man,” Wildman said. “He is extremely, extremely glad. And the fact that he is now reunited with his son is also reason for much joy. I was also able to get his son off that murder conviction.”

Mavado’s son, Dantay Brooks, was convicted in 2021 for the 2018 murder of Lorenzo Thomas in Cassava Piece, St Andrew, and sentenced to life imprisonment with eligibility for parole after 22 years. In March, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction. Wildman led that appeal.

Asked about the father-son reunion, Wildman said he was not present but was certain “there was a lot of joy”.

Wildman also revealed that the entertainer, who turns 44 on November 30, is planning a major performance in Jamaica later this year. “Yes ... I know there’s a show ... there’s something big coming up in December in Jamaica,” he said, declining to share further details.

Mavado, born and raised in Cassava Piece, rose to prominence in the mid-2000s with his breakout single Real McKoy, followed by hits such as Weh Dem a Do and So Special. His 2007 début album, Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks, earned critical acclaim and cemented his place in dancehall history.

Over the years, he has been signed to VP Records, We the Best Music Group, and Cash Money Records, and has collaborated with international acts, including Jay-Z, Akon, and Nicki Minaj.

On Wednesday, the artiste posted a video to his Instagram account, @mavadogully, showing moments from his arrival, including a stop to enjoy a coconut from a local jelly vendor. He captioned the post, “Home.”
