Nadine Blair ‘surprised’ by honour from City of Tamarac in Florida
Radio host and gospel singer to accept award, address Pink Heroes Gala on Saturday
If ever there was a poster child for ‘gospel royalty’, then radio personality, singer, worship leader, actress, author, poet, emcee, speaker and “lover of Christ Jesus” Nadine Blair would be it. The daughter of the late Bishop Reverend Dr Ronald Blair, her mother, Evon Blair, is also a minister, and her uncle is none other than President and founder of the Deliverance Evangelistic Association Inc Bishop Herro Blair. Her grandfather, Mortimer Blair, was a renowned pastor in Somerton, St James, and her uncles, Wellesley and Delbert Blair, are also ministers of the gospel.
Perpetually on a mission for Christ, Nadine is the founder of Allowed to Shine Ministries, the umbrella organisation for the in-demand gospel collective Perpetual Praise, a praise and worship ministry which she started in 2002 and of which she is the lead vocalist.
Along her decades-long Christian journey, Nadine has also started entities such as The Praise Continues, Singled Out Singles Ministry, When the Ministers Meet To Pray, Praise in da Streets.
At the Sterling Gospel Music Awards (SGMA) in 2024, Perpetual Sounds of Praise was honoured with the KFC Big Deal Award for Excellence “for significant contributions to the gospel industry”. Earlier this month, Nadine’s father was posthumously honoured with the SGMA KFC Big Deal Award for Excellence, which Nadine and her mother graciously accepted. She told The Gleaner that she was beyond delighted and honoured.
“I have always seen my parents as givers. In 2012, I did a series on ‘The Evolution of Gospel Music in Jamaica’. It was a joy to realise how much my dad and mom were pushers for gospel music in Jamaica. They also were always looking out for people and helping anyone they could. Mom continues this today. I was indeed happy for the consideration for honouring dad, and for the fact that my mother was able to be at the awards (which she enjoyed thoroughly) and represent dad as well,” Nadine shared.
This weekend, it will be Dr Nadine Blair’s time in the spotlight. She will be honoured at the City of Tamarac Pink Heroes Gala on Saturday, October 18 at the Colony West Golf Club in Florida. The award includes the City of Tamarac Medal of Honour, The Key to the region, which, a press release stated is “an amalgamation of keys, from Florida District 97 Representatives”.
“I was so surprised. I definitely did not see this coming,” Nadine told The Gleaner. “It took me a while to respond ... I kept wondering, ‘Why me?’ It is an honour to be recognised and given this opportunity to shine even more.”
She added, “It means a lot to me. I see this as more opportunities to help other people, which is my joy. I retired from full-time work and now look for opportunities to speak and encourage as much as I can.”
She will also give the special address at the Pink Gala this weekend.
Nadine is one of two nominees, the other being renowned philanthropist, real estate mogul, businesswoman and author Dr Trisha M. Bailey, who is known as “the richest Jamaican woman, with a net worth of close to US$1 billion”.
In a press release, Tamarac Commissioner Marlon Bolton said he was “thrilled to recognise these two exceptional women [whose] dedication to excellence and commitment to giving back to their community are truly inspiring”.
They will also receive the Key to Broward County from Broward District 7 County Commissioner, Alexandra P. Davis; Key to the City of Lauderhill by Lauderhill Mayor Denise D. Grant; Key to the City of Miramar by Yvette Colbourne, and a Congressional Proclamation from the United States District 20 Representative, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus McCormick.
