Miss Universe Jamaica to honour the memory of Tyra Spaulding
‘Hold close the friendships and family we create in this MUJ sisterhood,’ says Mark McDermoth
The Miss Universe Jamaica (MUJ) organisation has expressed deep sorrow at the untimely passing of Tyra Spaulding. The 26-year-old accountant was a “beloved finalist” in the 2023 Miss Universe Jamaica competition and already there are plans to honour her memory “in a meaningful way”.
In a press release, the organisers stated that “Tyra was more than a contestant; she was a vibrant, intelligent, and inspiring young woman whose grace and spirit touched everyone she met”.
Spaulding, who was reportedly a mental health awareness suicide prevention advocate, was found dead at her home on Wednesday in an apparent suicide.
National Director of the pageant, Mark McDermoth, told The Gleaner that her death has been “a deeply painful and shocking loss for all of us”.
“Former contestants and past queens have been reaching out continuously, offering condolences and sharing memories. It is a true testament to the lasting friendships and bonds she built within the Miss Universe Jamaica community,” McDermoth said.
“Tyra’s beauty was legendary and it also shone from the inside out, and that is what made her special and set her apart from others,” McDermoth added.
Quizzed about plans for a tribute to Spaulding, the grieving co-director said something will definitely be planned.
“Yes ... while we are still processing this tragedy, we are committed to honouring Tyra’s memory in a meaningful way. The details are still being thoughtfully planned, but we will ensure that her light and her contribution to the Miss Universe Jamaica brand is continuously celebrated,” he shared.
In a press release, National Directors Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams, and reigning Miss Universe Jamaica, Dr. Gabrielle Henry, all expressed their “deepest condolences to Tyra’s family, friends, and loved ones during this time of profound loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we remember and honour her remarkable life and legacy”.
When asked what message he would like to send to all the MUJ contestants, McDermoth spoke about the importance of focusing on health and the need to “cherish each other”.
“To our contestants, past, present and future, we encourage you to please remember that beyond the glamour of the stage, your well-being ... physical and mental ... is also very important. Stay connected, lean on each other, and never hesitate to reach out for support. Tyra’s life reminds us to cherish each other and to hold close the friendships and family we create in this Miss Universe Jamaica sisterhood,” McDermoth told The Gleaner.
