Sebastian Thomas – taking cosplay to the next level
As the countdown to Anime Picnic nears its end, we’re shining the final spotlight on one of Jamaica’s most celebrated cosplay talents — Sebastian Thomas.
A professional cosplayer, prop master, and costume designer, Sebastian has earned numerous titles across the island’s biggest conventions and has become a pillar of the local cosplay community through his craftsmanship, passion, and mentorship.
Sebastian’s journey into the world of cosplay was sparked by the awe-inspiring costumes he witnessed at earlier events. Those visual masterpieces ignited his imagination and motivated him to begin creating his own. Since then, he has consistently chosen characters that not only stand out visually but also challenge his skills as a designer. His personal favourite to date? The Wing Exia Gundam — an intricate and powerful look that reflects both his technical expertise and creative vision.
What Sebastian enjoys most about being part of cosplay in Jamaica is the blend of camaraderie and competition. For him, it’s the connections and friendships formed along the way that make the experience truly special. However, the path hasn’t been without its challenges. One recurring obstacle has been acquiring the right materials and ensuring they meet his design standards. Still, Sebastian has learned to navigate these hurdles with persistence and precision.
Looking ahead to Anime Picnic, Sebastian expressed excitement about the opportunity to showcase his work and connect with fellow creatives. More than just an event, Anime Picnic represents a shared celebration of culture and community. “What makes Anime Picnic special is the shared love for the culture. We’re all in the same space, enjoying the same things,” he shared.
Though he doesn’t point to one specific favourite memory, it’s clear that the collective moments and energy of cosplay events leave a lasting impact on him. His advice to aspiring cosplayers is simple but powerful: “Start small and work your way up.” It’s a reminder that every expert was once a beginner.
Cosplay has played a significant role in shaping Sebastian’s self-expression and confidence. “It gives me the confidence to get up and do what I want to.” Through his artistry and unwavering dedication, Sebastian Thomas continues to inspire and elevate Jamaica’s cosplay community — one character at a time.
