WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Stillness – The deepest need of mankind

Published:Sunday | April 6, 2025 | 12:13 AM

Life is a balance of movement and stillness, sound and silence. Yet in today’s world, we often find ourselves caught in constant motion, overwhelmed by noise and distractions. This imbalance leaves us feeling exhausted, restless, and disconnected from our innate self. Without moments of stillness, we lose the ability to reflect, recharge, and truly understand ourselves and our surroundings.

Stillness is a doorway to self-mastery and untapped potential. When we step into silence and calmness, we access the depths of our inner world. It is like looking into a still body of water — when turbulent, we cannot see below the surface, but when calm, we can see into its depths. Likewise, in moments of stillness, we gain clarity about our thoughts, feelings, and perspectives, allowing true self-transformation to begin. This process helps us make better decisions, strengthens our emotional resilience, and enhances our ability to navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and grace.

OUR RESET BUTTON

The deepest longing of the human spirit is to return to its highest potential. However, transformation does not happen instantly. It is a process, like a caterpillar entering its chrysalis before emerging as a butterfly. We can’t glue on wings and actually fly. Stillness is that crucial space where renewal takes place, wings get generated, preparing us for a fresh and enlightened way of living.

In moments of deep reflection, we reconnect with what has been long forgotten: our true essence. This inner stillness acts as a ‘reset’ button, like a defibrillator restoring the heart’s rhythm. It is in these moments of pause that we gather strength to break old habits, heal emotional wounds, and realign ourselves with our eternal purpose to respond to life with wisdom and clarity.

PATH TO INNER HEALING

But what exactly do we connect with in stillness? It is not just a state of physical silence but a return to our authentic self, where silence has the power to heal. True stillness is maintaining inner calm even while being active in the world. More profoundly, it is in this stillness that we reconnect with something beyond ourselves: the ‘Divine’. This higher connection reminds us of our true identity and strengthens our relationship with the Source of wisdom and peace.

Emerging from stillness, we carry a renewed sense of purpose and clarity. We no longer view life in problematic ways but embrace it with grace and awareness. Stillness, therefore, is not an escape from life but a return to it — fully present, fully alive, and in harmony with our deepest self. By practising stillness, we cultivate inner strength, emotional stability, and a profound sense of peace that enriches every aspect of our lives.
