Jamaican contractors can deliver at scale ... If we plan better and pay on time

Jamaicans often hear that there are too few contractors to carry out large road construction and maintenance programmes. While the number of contractors is important, it is not the only factor that determines whether road projects are completed successfully. Good planning and good management are just as important.
Instead of awarding too many road projects at the same time, programmes could be carried out in stages. This would allow contractors to finish one group of projects before moving on to the next, making better use of workers, equipment, and materials. It would also help maintain the quality of the work.
Another important step is understanding the land before construction begins. Careful studies of the soil, rock, slopes, and drainage help engineers design roads that are better suited to local conditions. These studies can reduce costly changes during construction, prevent delays, and help roads last longer.
Paying contractors on time is also essential. Contractors need regular payments to pay workers, suppliers, equipment operators, and subcontractors. When payments are delayed, work can slow down, equipment may remain idle, and projects often become more expensive. Prompt payment helps keep projects moving and allows contractors to plan with confidence.
Jamaica has many experienced contractors who have successfully completed major infrastructure projects. With proper planning, good site investigations, realistic schedules, fair contract management, and timely payments they can deliver many more secondary road projects across the island.
Improving Jamaica’s roads is not just about spending more money. It is about spending public funds wisely. Better planning, proper site investigations, timely payments, and effective project management can help deliver stronger, safer, and longer-lasting roads, while supporting the growth of Jamaica’s construction industry.
