Holland High School athlete Shanoya Douglas warmed up for next month’s World Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with a double victory over the weekend at the Flying Angels International Track and Field Championships in Toronto, Canada.
Douglas, who is down to compete in the 100m and 200m in Oregon, captured the Girls’ Under-20 100 metres in 11.25 seconds and the 400 metres in 55.47 seconds.
Coach Garth Smythe was pleased with his charge’s performances ahead of next month’s Under-20 Championships.
“The meet was used for Shanoya to get a blowout ahead of the World Under-20 Championships, and it was good for her to get some competition ahead of that meet,” said Smythe.
Douglas’ teammate at Holland, Mickelia Henlon, captured the Girls’ Under-20 long jump with a mark of 5.51 metres.
Two other athletes who are down to compete for Jamaica at next month’s Under-20 Championships, the William Knibb pair of Sanjay Seymore and Jabari Matheson, were also winners at the three-day meet which ended on Sunday.
Seymore, competing in the Boys’ Under-20 100 metres, won the event in 10.47 seconds, finishing ahead of Flying Angels’ Jahleel Henry, who was second in 10.50.
Matheson captured the Boys’ Under-20 200 metres in 21.02, while he was third in the Under-20 400 metres in 48.42.
Also over the weekend, two high school athletes, Natrece East of Wolmer’s Trust High School for Girls and Riquelme Reid of Excelsior High competed at the Fuse Sprint, World Continental Tour Bronze meet in Tottori, Japan.
East finished second in the Women’s 100 metres in 11.53, while Reid, the Class 1 100-metre champion at this year’s ISSA/GraceKenedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships, ended eighth in the men’s sprint in 10.97.
