A St Catherine man who pleaded guilty to transporting agricultural produce, which he said he bought from someone who sold him the crop from trees in their yard, without a receipt was fined $30,000 or 10 days’ imprisonment in the parish court on Wednesday.
Henry Roberts was given a stern warning by Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne not to repeat the offence, as the maximum fine is $3,000,000 or six months’ imprisonment.
Roberts was charged with carrying agricultural produce without a receipt.
Alleyne then asked why he did not have a receipt.
“Your Honour, the people I purchased the things from are private persons with a tree in their yard, so they are not registered,” Roberts said.
The facts are that about 5:15 p.m. on October 3, 2026, Roberts was observed driving a Nissan motor truck laden with coconuts and sugar cane in Bog Walk, St Catherine.
He was stopped, and the police requested receipts for the transportation of the goods.
He explained that he had spent $22,000 on the items but had no receipts.
He was subsequently arrested and charged.
