NWC: Water rationing for St Ann, St Mary and Portland due to drought

The National Water Commission (NWC) says it has been forced to regulate water supplied to customers in St Ann, St Mary and Portland as its facilities in these parishes are being impacted by drought conditions.

The NWC, in a media release on Wednesday, said it is seeing declining inflows at surface water sources.

As a result, the commission said some systems are currently producing between 10 and 50 per cent of their normal output, while others are completely out of operation.

To mitigate the effects of the drought, the NWC says it has implemented several regulated water supply schedules to service impacted parishes.

These measures will remain in effect until conditions improve.

In addition to the regulated schedules, the NWC says it has also stepped up water trucking services to assist customers who may not be able to be supplied through the pipes due to their location and elevation.

Customers are therefore being urged to adopt water conservation practices and ensure adequate water storage during this time.

Customers are encouraged to store water in clean, covered containers and have enough storage to last during the off-schedule periods; reuse water where possible; immediately fix leaks on their properties; avoid non-essential use, such as washing vehicles, watering lawns and filling pools.
