Collapsed Clarendon road reopens after emergency repairs, motorists urged to use caution - NWA

The National Works Agency (NWA) is reporting that emergency works have been carried out to fix a section of the Mineral Heights to Lionel Town main road in Clarendon that collapsed on Tuesday.

The NWA said the hole, which measured more than six metres wide and four metres deep, was excavated and suitable material used to reconstruct the road embankment.

As a result, the road has been temporarily reinstated.

The agency stated that the road failure occurred in the vicinity of Vere Technical High School, noting that the stretch of road is heavily used by large vehicles transporting aggregates.

The collapse resulted in the area being reduced to single-lane traffic.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said that although the affected section of the road has been restored, motorists should continue to exercise caution in the area as the permanent repairs have not yet been completed.

The NWA said its technical team is continuing investigations into what may have caused the embankment failure, particularly as there is no known drainage system in the immediate area.
