Responders are now trying to contain two fires they believe may have been “deliberately” started at the Riverton City Disposal Site in St Andrew.

The fires were detected shortly after 11 p.m. last night in separate sections of the country’s largest waste disposal site, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) confirmed on Friday.

“Based on preliminary observations, including the manner in which the fire started and the speed at which it spread, there is reason to believe it may have been deliberately set,” the NSWMA said in a public statement.

The NSWMA indicated, however, that it will await the outcome of a full investigation before making a definitive conclusion.

The statement said the Jamaica Fire Brigade was promptly notified about the fires and that firefighters were dispatched to the site within minutes.

The NSWMA said priority was given to containing the fire and prevent further spread.

“Containment efforts are ongoing and there are enough cover materials, trucks and heavy-duty equipment and capable personnel on site,” it said.
