President Obama reaffirmed today his commitment to the process of change in the United States.

He also vowed to meet the challenges facing the US.

Close to two million people gathered in the National Mall in a wintry Washington DC, to see Mr Obama take the oath shortly after mid-day.

He later joined a parade, smiling and waving en route to the White House.

Mr Obama and his wife, Michelle travelled in the armoured presidential limousine towards 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Crowds cheered and waved as the cars rolled slowly past.

The couple is due to attend a series of balls this evening before Mr Obama\'s first full day in office begins tomorrow.
