Five sticks of explosives were this morning found in department store in Paris after a letter was delivered to local media warning of possible bomb threats.

Officials said the French news agency AFP received a letter signed by a group calling itself the Afghan Revolutionary Front, warning of several bombs in the store.

The explosives, which were planted in washrooms on several floors, were first located by sniffer dogs.

The explosives comprised old sticks of dynamite held together with a piece of cord.

However, there was no detonator linked to them.

Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said basic investigations have revealed that the device was not set to explode.

She said further investigations would be conducted to find the perpetrators.
