Hard-hitting Jamaica and West Indies opener Chris Gayle has signed to play in Australia's Big Bash domestic Twenty20 competition for the Sydney Thunder.

Gayle is returning to the team where last season he smashed an unbeaten century off 54 deliveries, including 11 sixes, against Adelaide.

Gayle finished the competition with an average of 42 for the Thunder with 252 runs and hit the most sixes in the Big Bash League with 22.

Gayle said after his experience last year, he always wanted to.

Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has also signed to play for the Sydney Thunder.

The eight-team Big Bash League begins on December 7.
