BIAJ wants GCT on books rescinded

The Book Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ) has called a special emergency meeting of its members to address the issue of general consumption tax (GCT) being applied to books, effective June 1.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30 at Kingston Bookshop in downtown Kingston, according to a release from the Association.

The statement said Minister of Finance Dr. Peter Phillips has agreed to address the BIAJ’s concerns and hopefully meet with them before Wednesday morning.

“As you are aware, previous government administrations had attempted to tax books in 2003, 2005 and twice in 2009,” said the release.

It added that “the BIAJ successfully fought these decisions. Once again, and hopefully for the last time, we will have to take a stand on this issue.”

Invitation for Wednesday’s meeting has been extended to all book industry stakeholders.
