Phillips says new IMF deal in sight

Published:Thursday | May 24, 2012 | 5:53 PM

Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips says Jamaica is on course to resume a relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He says so far, the dialogue has been more than a negotiation, since it is also aimed at getting help for a reform programme.

According to Dr Phillips, at the centre of the talks, is consideration for the development of a social programme to protect the vulnerable.

Dr Phillips also says recent meetings with the IMF were not held on the basis of any pre-condition.

However, the minister says as the Government prepares to enter intense discussions with the IMF in a matter of days there are several things it must do.
