Tripoli bombing

11 people have been killed by a blast in the centre of the Lebanese city of Tripoli.

Security officials say a bomb went off close to a bus.

The passengers included a number of off-duty soldiers.

Tripoli has reportedly been the scene of sectarian fighting in recent months in which more than 20 people have died.

The attack comes a day after the new national unity government won a vote of confidence and as President Michel Suleiman was due to travel to Syria.

Correspondents say it appeared the bomb was intended to disrupt the groundbreaking presidential visit, which was hoped to improve years of stormy relations between the two neighbours.
