There has reportedly been a dramatic increase in the number of employers being prosecuted for hiring illegal immigrants in the United Kingdom.

According to BBC reports, since February, 137 businesses have been caught employing workers who do not have the required permit.

This is said to be 10 times the number caught in 2007, and more than double the number prosecuted in the previous decade.

Employers are now facing fines of up to 10,000 pounds for each illegal immigrant they employ.

Persistent offenders also face jail sentences.

Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said the new regime is part of a big shake-up of Britain\'s border security.
