The pursuit of the 2026 Jamaica Cricket Association Michael Holding Senior Cup title reaches a crucial stage today when the two-day semi-finals bowl off.
Defending champions Kensington CC will square off against former titleholders Melbourne CC at Chedwin Park while St Catherine CC battle Trelawny CA at Kensington Park.
All eyes will be on Chedwin Park, where the defending champions, Kensington, will be forced to adapt without their strike bowler, Ojay Shields.
The pacer who dismantled the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) with a four-wicket haul in the quarter-finals is unavailable due to international duties with a West Indies XI against the touring Sri Lankans in Antigua.
However, Kensington's batting line-up remains a fortress. They cruised past JDF on the back of a monumental 133 from the in-form Ryan Francis, who was expertly supported by opener Leroy Lugg’s classy 90.
Francis isn’t just a destroyer with the bat. He has been a nightmare for opposition batters all season, snaring 39 wickets in just 12 innings.
Kensington will look to him, along with all-rounder Jamie Hay, to fill the void left by Shields with the ball.
Standing in their way is a Melbourne side riding a wave of confidence after a colossal quarter-final performance against St Elizabeth, where they amassed over 400 runs.
Captain and national player Javelle Glenn is the linchpin of the batting order, fresh off a mammoth 182-run knock that showcased his appetite for big scores.
Melbourne’s bowling attack is spearheaded by the wily leg-spinner Matthew Comrie, who has been nearly unplayable this season, matching Francis’s wicket tally with 38 scalps in 12 innings.
Over at Kensington Park, St Catherine CC will pin their hopes on national spinner Jeavor Royal. The star all-rounder was sensational in the quarter-final victory over GC Foster, wreaking havoc with an 11-wicket haul and chipping in with a gritty 64 runs.
With 28 wickets to his name in the competition, Royal’s flight and turn will be crucial against a sturdy Trelawny line-up.
However, Trelawny possess a trump card of their own in spinner Osburn Palmer, the competition’s leading wicket-taker.
Palmer has been relentless, bagging 42 wickets in 13 innings, and he will be eager to expose any chinks in St Catherine's armour.
Complementing the bowling is the reliable Howard Palmer, who has been the bedrock of Trelawny’s batting with 479 runs in just nine innings this season.
