English Racing - Thunder Strike at Newbury
Today's racing takes place at Newbury, Nottingham and Haydock.
News coming out of England is that Jamie Piggott, son of the legendary jockey Lester Piggott, finished well beaten aboard his first ride in public at Killarney yesterday.
The 19-year-old apprentice partnered PIVOTAL ROCK for his boss Tommy Stack in the Kilarney Grand Live Music Handicap over an extended mile, with the six-year-old strongly backed and sent off the 6-1 favourite.
But PIVOTAL ROCK, after racing prominently, gradually faded to finish seventh. Victory went to the 20-1 outsider MEASURED APPROVAL with jockey Danny Grant aboard. According to the Sky Sports website (SkySport.com), young Piggott said it was a great experience and, hopefully, he can go on and become a good jockey.
Meanwhile, today at Newbury in the 14th race, the $2.5 million Rose Bowl Stakes over six furlongs, we like the look of marginal 6-4 favourite THUNDER STRIKE, with Richard Hughes riding for trainer Richard Hannon in a field of five. The 2-y-o colt has won three of his four races to date and with Hannon having a good record with his juveniles, he ought to be followed.
